
Monika Holbein, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Dept of Hematology, West Virginia University Oncology
Monika Holbein, MD went to medical school at Ruprecht Karls University in Heidelberg Germany. She completed Internal Medicine residency at UMDNJ Newark New Jersey and went on to Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at UPMC Pittsburgh. She is now an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Department of Hematology and Oncology at West Virginia University. She is the Supportive Oncology Director. She is the past Chair of the Substance Use Disorder and Diversion special interest group within American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine. She has been active in education regarding the intersection of substance use disorder and palliative care most recently writing a point/counterpoint case presentation for the AAHPM quarterly on a patient diagnosed with cancer and a substance use disorder. She continues to advocate for more inclusive and evidence-based treatment of patients at the intersection of life limiting illnesses and substance use disorder within West Virginia University and is collaborating on projects with others across the country to bring more attention to this special population.
